Grandparents Day 2016

Catholic Schools Week took place from Sunday, January 31st to Saturday, February 6th. This year the theme for Catholic Schools Week was: Challenged to Proclaim God’s Mercy.

Grandparents Day was held on  Wednesday, 3rd February and this was the highlight of our week. Our Grandparents came to the school and a lovely prayer service was held. Fr.Whitney celebrated our service and our throats were also blessed as it was the Feast of St. Blaise.

We remembered all our grandparents that were unable to attend and also our grandparents who are no longer with us. Declan wrote a poem for all grandparents and recited this poem during our service.

After our prayer service, the children presented their grandparents with a card and showed them the pictures and poems they had made for them. It was a lovely day and both grandparents and children really enjoyed it.

The children in the Junior Room drew portraits of their Grandparents. All the Grandparents loved looking at their portrait!

Green Schools: Biodiversity

This year we are learning all about Biodiversity and we are hoping to attract birds and insects around our school grounds. We built a bug hotel earlier and we have completed projects on our native animals, trees and native birds of Ireland.

In Art we made a model of our school showing the different areas such as the hedgerow, our bug hotel, our wildflower area and much more.

RDS Primary Science Fair

The children from the Senior Room were delighted to be chosen to exhibit at the Primary Science Fair which is part of the BT Young Scientist in the RDS on Saturday 9th January.

Our exhibit ‘Does our smell and sight along with our mind alter our taste perception?’ showed that the majority of people view food and drink by their colour and smell, thus, having their mind made up as to whether they will like the food/drink or not!

The children really enjoyed showcasing their experiment and findings, they showed great communication skills and were very busy answering questions all day. The children were judged on their exhibit and the judge gave great feedback, telling the children that they ‘asked a very interesting question’, ‘they were great communicators, answered all his questions very well, explained the experiment and findings very well’.

The children really enjoyed the experience and they got to see many science shows such as ‘Titan’, ‘World of Robots’ and ‘Celestial Voyage’. The children also met Simon and Claire from Swipe TV and had a great time viewing all the interesting projects, both primary and secondary, along with stalls such as Teagasc, Easonology, European Union, RTE, Intel, Irish Aid, Road Safety/Garda Síochana, Coastguard 112 and many, many more.

The children got a lovely plaque as a memento of their day. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and hopefully the children will return to exhibit again!
